The Carens, Kia’s fourth model in India, will go on sale somewhere between February and March. Kia Carens reservations are expected to open on January 14. Kia has chosen a highly unusual strategy for the Carens, defying the SUV trend. The automaker refers to it as a “recreational vehicle” and has generously equipped it with features.
Here are a few of the distinguishing qualities of the Carens that set it apart from its competitors.
- A single-paned roof and roof-mounted air vents :
While the majority of three-row vehicles have panoramic sunroofs, Kia only gave the Carens a single-pane sunroof. This is due to the fact that the Carens has specific roof-mounted AC vents for the second and third rows of seats. Although roof-mounted AC vents aren’t very novel, Kia has prioritised them over panoramic sunroofs because they believe they would improve rear passenger cooling.
- Paddle shifters and a DCT gearbox with a turbocharged engine :
The most impressive of the three available engines is the 140 horsepower, 1.4-liter, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT transmission. The enthusiast’s choice, the DCT-equipped variant will also feature paddle shifters and drive modes. For comparison, the Ertiga and XL6 are available with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, whilst potential rivals like the Mahindra Marazzo are only supplied with a diesel engine.
- Highest class wheelbase length :
The Carens has a 2,780mm wheelbase and is built on a stretched Seltos platform. This makes the Carens, which is 20mm longer than the Hyundai Alcazar and Mahindra Marazzo in its class, the vehicle with the longest wheelbase. The Carens’ wheelbase is 40mm longer than that of the XL6 and Ertiga. The wheelbase of the Carens is 30 mm longer than that of the Toyota Innova Crysta. Leg room on the second and third rows of the Carens should therefore be fairly enough.
- Six airbags standard, hill descent control, and 4-disc brakes :
With the Carens, Kia prioritised safety, and even the entry-level models of the vehicle are amply furnished with features like six airbags, hill-start assist, hill-hold assist even four-corner disc brakes and a tyre pressure monitoring system. No other car in its class comes standard with six airbags across all trim levels.
- Second row that collapses electrically :
The second row of seats can be folded down to provide access to the third row. The Carens has an electric tumble-down feature, in contrast to the majority of three-row vehicles that have manual functionality. A seat can be conveniently folded away and turned upside down to provide for simple access to the third row by pressing a button on the rear of the seat.
